One
very important thing that's essential in choosing an instrument is
making sure you really like the sound of it. You should love the sound
of a note played by itself, or a simple chord played alone. The better
your guitar's tone, the more inspired you will be. I used to go and
play my guitar in the bathroom, because the natural echo in there
made my guitar sound so good it was truly inspirational. I think I
came up with some of my best stuff in there. Anything that makes your
guitar sound better to you- whether it's a different amp, an effects
pedal, an internal mike in an acoustic guitar, whatever- go for it
and you will be inspired to play better and more creatively. I really
can't stress this point enough.
The guitar need not be
expensive- there are plenty of inexpensive guitars out there with
good sound. This includes cheap electrics as well as acoustics. And
conversely, you can pay huge prices for guitars that you may not like
the sound of or have an easy time playing. Trust your own ear- you're
the one who has to hear the guitar every day. One trick I learned
was to play solid-body electric guitars without an amp. Some will
ring out pretty nicely ,while other guitars sound very flat and lifeless.
More important, however, is that you like the sound of the guitar
through the amp you use to play and practice with.
